Vermont Preparing for Cuts to LI-HEAP Program

Posted: Updated:
MONTPELIER, Vt. -

Vermont lawmakers brace themselves for federal cuts to a program that helps people keep warm in the winter.

Last year the state picked up the $7 million shortfall in the LI-HEAP program.

Governor Peter Shumlin says that isn't a habit he'd like to see develop every year.

But, he says it's important to make sure LI-HEAP funds stay intact.

"We can not in the state of Vermont afford to bail out every single program that this congress continues to cut, however, we are not going to let Vermonters freeze in their homes and we're going to figure something out," Gov. Shumlin said.

This November people will get their first LI-HEAP fuel checks.
