Romney Prepares for Debates in Vermont

Posted: Updated:
WEST WINDSOR, Vt. -

As the Democratic National Convention kicks off, the Republican Presidential hopeful has opted to lay low in the green mountain state. He's not here to campaign, here's here to begin preparations with his top advisers for the upcoming debates.

Romney is staying at the home of the former Massachusetts Lieutenant Governor Kerry Healey, in West Windsor. You actually can't see the house from the road - and that may be one of the reasons the location was chosen - but down a long driveway is where Governor Mitt Romney will prepare for the three presidential debates.

Down a quiet and secluded road sits a man hoping to unseat President Barack Obama. The Republican nominee, Mitt Romney will spend three days in Vermont.

I asked a University of Vermont political science professor if Romney has any chance of winning in Vermont? Garrison Nelson, said "No."

Professor Nelson thinks that because Vermont hasn't voted in favor of a Republican Presidential candidate since 1988.

"Vermont is a very socially liberal state," Nelson said.

But for one man from Massachusetts who voted for Romney once and plans to do so again in November says he's welcome in the predominantly blue state.

"He has a business background and he has created jobs," The Romney supporter said.

I asked another resident if Romney would be welcome in his neighborhood? "He repulses me," said James Galligan. The Obama supporter says he's not a fan of the Republican.

"I think that he is responsible for the loss of a large number of jobs and he's afraid to release his income tax because it'll be damaging," said Galligan.

Vermont State Police and Secret Service staked out all day along with local media, and while local tax payer money is funding the amped up security, they won't be reimbursed by Romney's team.

"The last Republican chose not to set foot in this state," Nelson said about George Bush.

Clearly Romney is taking a different approach, there was no sight of him all day.

And surprisingly there weren't any protesters, but again Mitt Romney is in town for the next two days, and police have hinted that we may see more of the Presidential hopeful in the coming days. @
