Bear Hunting Season Starts Saturday

Posted: Updated:
MONTPELIER, Vt. -

This Saturday, bear hunting season kicks off.

Vermont wildlife leaders say next year hunters can expect some changes.

Right now when you buy a regular hunting license, you're entitled to shoot a bear.

Next September 1st, you will need an early bear season tag.

That's so wildlife leaders can get a better handle on the population.

"There's a large following of people who love to hunt bear, and they hunt it primarily for the meat; and amazingly we've been averaging close to 500 bears shot each hunting season," Mark Scott of the Vermont Fish and Wildlife said.

25 years ago the bear population was less than 3,000. Today, it's nearly doubled.
