Environmental Group Wants to Block Permit Allowing Vermont Yankee to Discharge Water

Posted: Updated:
VERNON, Vt. -

An environmental group wants to block a permit, allowing the plant to discharge water into the Connecticut River.

The Connecticut River Watershed Council says it wants to see the science to back up the claim that it's safe.

The Vernon reactor is allowed to discharge water taken from the river to cool the plant back into the river.

They are able to do that as long as the temperatures do not exceed 85 degrees.

The state is trying to get the permit renewed.
