Burlington National Weather Service Announced Upgraded Doppler Radar Monday

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Senator Patrick Leahy says "Every second counts," especially when it comes to severe weather.

On Monday, the senator and leaders at Burlington's National Weather Service announced an upgrade to their Doppler radar system.

It's part of a national enhancement, equipping all systems in the U.S. With "dual polarization" or "dual pol."

It allows meteorologists to see the shape and size of precipitation to better predict rainfall estimates and pinpoint where rain turns to snow, sleet or freezing rain.

"They're potentially lifesaving enhancements and if anyone thinks the best weather information possible isn't lifesaving, just think back one year ago," Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) said.

It can also help forecast a tornado in the dark and predict aircraft hazards.
