NY Historic Sites Weather Tropical Storm Irene

Posted: Updated:
FORT JOHNSON, N.Y. -

(AP) - Some of the dozens of New York state parks and historic sites damaged by flooding brought on by Tropical Storm Irene are still recovering a year later.

State-owned properties alone sustained millions of dollars in flood-related damage in late August 2011, from beach erosion at Long Island's Jones Beach to washed-out walls at the 18th century mansion at Guy Park in the Mohawk Valley.

The flooding caused extensive damage to a pair of Colonial-era sites located along the same stretch of the Mohawk River: privately owned Old Fort Johnson and the state-owned Schoharie Crossing.

The storm washed out the crossing's parking lot but on the plus side, uncovered the remains of a frontier fort. Floodwaters carried away artifacts from Guy Park and inundated Fort Johnson in several feet of water.
