Vt. Cemetery Still Awaits Irene Repairs

Posted: Updated:
ROCHESTER, Vt. -

(AP) - Progress is slow repairing Rochester's Woodlawn Cemetery after floodwaters from Tropical Storm Irene tore 50 graves from their resting place in the Vermont mountain town.

Two dozen sets of human remains that were washed out of the cemetery but recovered still sit in burial vaults awaiting their return to the earth.

Twenty-six sets of remains are still missing, washed into the White River. It's unclear if they will ever be found.

Rochester Cemetery Commissioner Sue Flewelling says a contractor is supposed to make final repairs to the cemetery by Oct. 1. She's hoping the remains can be reburied by the end of October.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is supposed to help with the cost, but Flewelling still doesn't have an estimate.
