Senate Hearing Monday on Vermont Gas Prices

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

If you haven't noticed...gas prices are ticking back up again. Not a lot but they are still way too high for most people. Tomorrow Vermont's US Senator Bernie Sanders will put more pressure on lowering gas prices in the Burlington area.

Many people in northwestern Vermont think something should finally be done about these high gas prices.

"It's ridiculous. It seems like it's always going up and never down," Jeremy Elwood said.

Vermont's US Senator Bernie Sanders agrees. That's why he will hold a senate committee hearing in Burlington Monday about Vermont gas prices and how stations set them.

"Chittenden County, Franklin County, Grand Isle County are much higher than they are in other parts of the state. Why is that?" Senator Sanders told us on July 3.

"I think Bernie Sanders had a good deal over there when he's getting on their backsides. It's about time," Kurt Calvaneau said.

Sanders argues for more competition. That could come from Costco, which is fighting to add a gas station to its Colchester store.

Costco will have a chance at the hearing to explain how it can beat the price of other stations.

"I do really hope that Costco can run roughshod over these guys. I see some of these prices dropping now they're probably getting nervous," Calvaneau said.

A month after Sanders brought up the issue, AAA says Burlington prices are about the same. While these prices might seem high to Vermonters, it's still a better deal for Jessica Hinckley who was driving from Plattsburgh to New Hampshire and stopped to fill up in Colchester.

"Not really that bad compared to places around," Hinckley said.
