Post Office Preparing for First Ever Default

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

The United States Postal Service is preparing for a first ever default on billions of dollars due to the Treasury.

The agency says two legally required payments for future post office retirees' health benefits will go unpaid.

The first $5.5 billion is due Wednesday. The other $5.6 billion is due in September.

These defaults won't affect day to day mail service.

Post offices will stay open and employees will get paid along with health benefits.
