Protesters say police used pepper balls

Posted: Updated:

Protesters making their point about environmental issues and tar sand oil say police used rubber bullets and pepper spray against them while they were protesting police.

Downtown Burlington was the site of a protest aimed at the Conference of New England Governors and Canadian Premieres. Protesters marched toward the Hilton, where Monday the political leaders will meet to discuss trade and environmental policy.

Protesters say that on College Street a confrontation between police began.

Protester Jonathan Levitt showed us the evidence of what he said police did to him.

"While we were in a public space non-violently protesting we were shot with pepper balls and beaten with police officers fists," Levitt said.

"You can see the welts rising on my leg there."

Police have not responded yet as to what caused the confrontation.
