Two cats shot by pellet gun in Rutland

Posted: Updated:
RUTLAND, Vt. -

Ann Mooney has let her cat Charlie roam around outside since she got him ten years ago but when she returned home one day last week she noticed he had been injured.

He was moving very slowly and when I tried to pick him up to help him along he a gave out a cry so I knew something was hurting him," Mooney said.

She took him to the veterinarian where he discovered a pellet lodged near Charlie's abdomen.

"It could have been a lot worse if it had penetrated an important structure," Veterinarian Robert Macpherson said.

And the shooting doesn't look like an accident.

"I gave him the benefit of the doubt but then with the second happening it looked like someone was shooting cats," Mooney said.

Another cat from the same block was brought to the vet earlier that week with a pellet gun wound. Both are ok and neither had surgery, but Mooney isn't giving Charlie the same freedom as before.

"He hasn't gone out since…because I don't know what's out there," Mooney said.

Now Rutland police are looking for information about the pellet gun shooting on usually quiet Walnut Street.
