A tornado possibly hit Elmira, New York Thursday afternoon/evening. I say 'possibly' because as I type this the National Weather Service in Binghamton, New York is surveying the damage at the scene. As it stands right now, it appears the meteorologists at the NWS will confirm this tornado on the estimated strength of EF-1 in my opinion.
At this time, I can't get the pictures into the blog but here is a good link from Reuters on Yahoo!'s website.
Also, if you go onto www.facebook.com and type in WENY-TV at the top search bar. The local TV station has had tons of pictures uploaded to their website. Just be careful, because some of the pictures might be from other parts of the country and not showing a tornado from the Elmira, NY area.
Regardless the pictures show a lot of tree damage. There is a shot of part of a brick building torn off. Also some debris from what looks to be a shed. Just looking at the pictures I would estimate winds around 90-100 mph in spots and categorized as an EF-1 tornado.
When the National Weather Service wraps up its damage survey Friday, they'll probably post something to their homepage on-line. Here's the link to their site so you can check out more information if you're interested in the follow up. http://www.erh.noaa.gov/bgm/
Overall Thursday's storms produced a lot of storm reports. There were more than 300 wind damage reports and that 1 tornado report near Elmira, NY. We'll see if the NWS verifies it!
