Police are investigating a hit and run that closed a block of Margaret Street in Plattsburgh this afternoon and ended with a charge of possession of heroin for Maximilian Marte.

To see how it all happened all you had to do was follow the trail of evidence heading south on Margaret St.

Police say that Marte likely crossed the center line heading south on Margaret St. and struck the car of 84 year old Dale Chaffee. At that time Marte lost the front left tire of his vehicle but still drove a couple hundred yards down the road before stopping near the end of the block.

Both Chaffee and Marte were taken to the hospital. There's no word from police yet if they've been discharged or what their condition is.

Police say they saw evidence of drug use in Marte's car so they started searching it. Police pulled out several pieces of evidence they wouldn't confirm to us but there appeared to be empty packets of two types of incenses often used as synthetic drugs as well as a pipe, cigar wraps and a scale.

Police also found what looked like packets of heroin and later confirmed that they were charging Marte with criminal possession of control substance 7.

Margaret St. has been reopened.

We will continue to provide updates on the case as we get them.
