Vermont State Environmental Staff says about 500,000 gallons of overly chlorinated water flowed into Lake Champlain in St. Albans, Vt. Tuesday.
The city says there was a problem with the treatment plant, which allowed the water to enter the lake.
The state says there is no danger to people.
Any impact to the environment, including fish, should be minor
