Tuesday Marks One Year Anniversary of Marriage Equality in New York

ALBANY, N.Y. -

Tuesday marks the one year anniversary of marriage equality taking effect in New York state.

"One year ago, the Marriage Equality Act became a reality for same-sex couples upstate and downstate who had been living for decades with disparate treatment simply based on their sexual orientation," N.Y. Governor Andrew Cuomo said in a press release. "Since then, thousands of same-sex couples have gotten married in New York and are now afforded thousands of benefits and protections that they were previously deprived of under state law, including health care and hospital visitation rights, pension benefits, property ownership, inheritance rights, and safeguards against loss or injury of a spouse."

According to National Conference of State Legislatures, New York is one of six states that currently allow same-sex marriage. Other states that allow gay marriage are Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, and Washington D.C.

Maryland and Washington state recently passed laws legalizing same-sex marriage; however, those laws have not gone into effect yet.
