ESSEX, Vt. -
For the family, friends, and neighbors of Bill and Lorraine Currier this has been a long and difficult year.
Many say while news from prosecutors that the couple was likely murdered brings some idea of what happened, they are frustrated that so many other questions remain unanswered.
At the former home of the Curriers in Essex, Vermont Friday, there were fresh flowers at their doorstep.
"They were really great. They had a big thing out for Halloween. Christmas carols and all that stuff out for Christmas," says Randi Tomczak, a neighbor.
Tomczak says she had a lot of questions now that prosecutors say her neighbors were murdered. She says she is nervous about what's being called a random crime.
"It's not very reassuring. Although I want to believe it, I don't understand how they got from anywhere to Colbert Street," says Tomczak.
Neighbors say they hope Friday's news brings some closure to the family of the Curriers.
The family has not spoken since the search started a year ago. Now that part of the mystery is over, the family released a statement.
In it, they thanked the community and police for standing by them during this nightmare.
They wrote, "Our family circle has a huge gap with the loss of Bill and Lorraine."
To remember them, the family asked people to, "respond to this random act of violence with daily acts of kindness."
The family has asked for privacy as they absorb the news and grieve. At this point, they say they haven't made plans for a public memorial.
