Ft. Ticonderoga to Restage Brits' 1777 Cannon Feat

TICONDEROGA, N.Y. -

About 250 re-enactors from New York, New England, Michigan and Virginia will be at Fort Ticonderoga this weekend to restage a military maneuver that forced American troops to abandon the stronghold during the Revolutionary War.

Re-enactors portraying British artillerymen plan to use a system of ropes and harnesses to haul a carriage-mounted cannon through the village of Ticonderoga on Saturday evening. Their destination is the summit of nearby Mount Defiance.

The living history event is a re-enactment of how the redcoats hauled four cannon to the same summit in early July 1777 via a road they cut through the woods.

The position gave the British guns a clear shot at Fort Ticonderoga below, a predicament that forced the American garrison to pull out.

Other re-enactments are being held at the fort Saturday and Sunday.
