Gang Fights on the Rise in Prisons

Posted: Updated:
MONTPELIER, Vt. -

Overcrowding in Vermont prisons is a consistent problem. Today, a committee brainstormed possible solutions.

There are 500 more inmates than there are beds in the state. The temporary solution, continue sending felons out of state. Ideally, a new facility would be built, but no one wants a prison in their backyard.

The Department of Corrections is working to better manage the population in the state, but for the first time ever, gang fights in prisons are up.

"Inmate on inmate assaults, fights in the cafeteria, fights in the yard, a punch in the face, a push, a shove, that kind of stuff," Department of Corrections Commissioner Andy Pallito said.

The legislative committee will meet again in September to discuss this same topic.
