Home Explosion in Townshend, Vt.

TOWNSHEND, Vt. -

Police say a two-story home exploded around 3:00AM Wednesday in Townshend.

They say no one was hurt.

At this point, police say the cause is not suspicious and think it might be because of a propane leak.

The explosion knocked the home of its foundation and sent debris flying up to 200 feet away.

People came from all over to see what remained of this home from the 1800's.

"It exploded from downstairs and the whole building fell on top of itself," says Kit Martin, Townshend selectboard member.

"I couldn't believe it, it could blow away this house," says Art Monet, who lives nearby.

Some parts of the home damaged a dentist office next door and was forced to temporarily close.

"When you have catastrophes, you gotta look at the bright side," says Martin.

Martin says the owner was away on vacation.  Also because it was late at night, no cars were on the road and people weren't on the sidewalk.

"Usually there are kids walking by there and that sort of thing and the other thing is it didn't result in any fire," says Martin.

Still police say they believe two cats died inside and the home is a complete loss.

"This house had been here since 1820 and I hate to see anything historical in this village go," says Monet.

Neighbors say the owner had complained about a propane problem but thought it was okay.

Police say they will investigate the cause.
