Vermont to Pay Fine in IMS Health 1st Amendment Violation

MONTPELIER, Vt. -

Vermont is about to pay a hefty fine.

According to court documents, Vermont must pay medical data mining company, IMS Health over $2 million in legal fees.

It's for a case the company won.

They argue that state law was trying to restrict its activities, violating the 1st Amendment.

The law required the company to get doctors' permission before selling data on prescription writing habits to drug makers.

The Supreme Court ruled in favor of the company last year.
