Rouses Point, NY -
Walk into Corner Stone Drug & Gift in Rouses Point, New York and it looks like any other store. You can fill prescriptions, buy cards or just in time for summer get new shades.
Even though you can buy the sunglasses, you better wait to put them on until you're outside. That's because store owners put up signs, asking customers to not wear hats, shades or hooded sweatshirts while inside.
A dress code owners say some people have complained about. But many others like the idea.
"I really don't think it's a big deal if it's going to make everybody feel safer, why not," said Maria Canty?
"If a person comes in dressed the way, with the hood, glasses and the cap and if they don't like it, then leave," said Phyllis Young.
The store owner says the intention of the policy is not to discriminate against, but when you come in the middle of summer wearing hat glasses and a hoodie, it can look awfully suspicious. The store created the policy after recent robberies at two area Walgreens, one in Plattsburgh, the other in South Burlington.
The store doesn't want to scare customers but create an environment that's safe for everyone. After all some shoppers say it's better to be safe than sorry.
"We live in small towns. It's unbelievable what's going on," said Young.
It's sad Young says to see a business have to put up signs to keep thieves out. Store owners say they're not looking to call police on everyone wearing those items.
They might however ask you to remove them. And if you don't they might call police.
