Waterbury, Vt. - The Waterbury State Complex has been sitting vacant since Tropical Storm Irene gutted it. But, in abandoned buildings, some find hidden treasures.
Cables and wires dangling from the ceiling and eerie underground tunnels. Most buildings at the Waterbury State complex have been stripped clean save for some perfectly stacked toilets. It is difficult to imagine that the place used to be a hub for thousands of Vermont State workers.
More than a dozen of the complex's buildings are set to be demolished. But, the State has found a way to keep some of it alive.
The State is hosting a giant sale, with items from furniture, to fans, to filing cabinets. They have all been stripped from buildings within the State complex.
"This is really a chance for the State to take assets that have been paid for once by taxpayers and put them back into the hands of our cities, towns, our schools, and our non-profits," Vermont Director of Government Business Services Ed Von Turkovich said.
For Vermont cities, towns, schools, and non profit agencies, the items are free. And after they have been through, the public can buy items for discounted prices.
