Homeless Shelter Loses Its Home in Storm

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

A place that helps the homeless has essentially lost its home. The storms destroyed the COTS Daystation in Burlington.

It's where the homeless wash their clothes, check email, receive mail and get perhaps their only bite to eat for the entire day. But now, the shelter is covered with mud, the walls and furniture are fully saturated from the 16 inches of water.The meeting spaces designed to help homeless get jobs aren't functional.

Organizers are trying to find an alternative site as quickly as possible.  "It isn't an option for a place like COTS not to recover because we're where hundreds of people who have no homes have to turn," COTS Daystation Executive Director Rita Markely said.
