Sanders Wants Investigation Into Burlington Gas Prices

Posted: Updated:

Burlington, Vt. - Burlington area drivers, you are paying more than drivers in Maine and New Hampshire to fill up your gas tank. Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders wants a Federal investigation to find out why.

Fuel experts say gas is always more expensive in Vermont because the ports where the gas comes from are farther away. But, Sanders says the greater Burlington area is dealing with a different issue. That is the fact that gas prices in Chittenden County are falling significantly slower than the rest of New England.

Prices only dropped about 15 cents over one month compared to 25 cents in other New England cities.

Sanders has his theories as to why.

"In the Chittenden County area for example, we have four companies controlling about 57 percent of the gas stations. So you may not have the kind of competition, price competition, that you have in other parts of New England," Sanders, (I) Vermont said.

Sanders spoke with the Federal Trade Commission and the U.S. Attorney General's office on Monday. There is no word yet on when the investigation will start or how long it will take. An aid to Sanders told us that all parties are taking the issue seriously.
