More Algae Blooms Popping Up on Lake Champlain

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

More algae blooms are popping up around Lake Champlain.

According to a weekly status update posted Tuesday on the Vermont Department of Health's website, algae blooms have been reported at a number of locations, including Shelburne Bay, Red Rocks Point, the Burlington waterfront (near the Boathouse), Missiquoi Bay, and at Willsboro, New York.

Blooms have also been spotted in the southern section of the lake from the Crown Point Bridge to Thompsons Point on both the Vermont and New York shorelines.

The department says strong winds are expected Wednesday and that will move the algae around. Anyone on or near the water should be careful.

The last update the department had, which was on June 22, said algae had only been spotted in some sections of the Burlington Bay on the main lake along the Burlington waterfront.

If you believe that someone has become ill because of blue-green algae, please contact the health department at 1-800-439-8550.
