Anti Vermont Yankee Groups Rally

Posted: Updated:
VERNON, Vt. -

Some chanting, screaming and even dancing kicked off a rally Sunday against the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant Sunday. Protesters rallied before biking and busing down to the Entergy Corporation facility. It was their second protest this year.

"Today was all about making a distinction and painting a clear picture of our energy independence from the Entergy corporation," SAGE advocate and protest organizer Chad Simmons said.

The protesters voiced their dissatisfaction with the Entergy run facility over issues like waste and the plant's age, but then there was silence as 38 of them made their way onto the plant's property to be arrested.

Last week the U.S. appeals court ruled that the plant can keep its new operating license, rejecting a challenge that Vermont brought to the license granted by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).

But protesters believe the plant is on its way out, which is why they came with their own unique farewell gift. A "Trojan cow" that was at least ten feet high.

"We're delivering Entergy a gift. A going away gift," Simmons said.

"Because in our mind no matter what happens in the courts Vermont Yankee will close and Entergy will be forced to close it."
