Repairs Continue to Vt. Nuke Plant Cooling Pump

Posted: Updated:
VERNON, Vt. -

There's no word when the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant will return to full power after the failure of a pump that controls the flow of cooling water to the reactor.

One of two pumps failed a week ago, forcing the plant to reduce its output to 45 percent of normal.

Plant spokesman Rob Williams tells Vermont Public Radio technicians have repaired wiring in the generator and it's being tested before being returned to service.

Arnie Gundersen, a nuclear engineer and member of a state Yankee oversight panel, says equipment breakdowns in a 40-year-old reactor should not be a surprise. He says the plant has experienced a number of problems this year.

But Williams say the plant is properly maintained.
