Wanted Fugitive Caught After Police Standoff

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

A standoff lasted nearly three hours in Burlington Monday evening. It all started when police and U.S. Marshals were looking for a man who was wanted on several charges including aggravated domestic assault. They found him in Burlington and that's when chase began, it took nearly three hours but he has been caught.

Law enforcement pulled out all the stops when it came to hunting down a wanted man.

"Anytime someone is a fugitive and is potentially armed, that's concerning," said Burlington Police Chief, Michael Schirling.

An armored vehicle, swat teams and K-9 units were all called in to find a potentially armed fugitive.

"We attempted to make contact using throw phones, bull horns and things of that nature, he didn't respond to any of those," said Chief Schirling.

Police initially spotted the wanted man who took off running into a home on Front street, that's when they realized he was armed.

"A firearm was recovered during the foot pursuit; there was reason to believe that the subject was armed," said Chief Schirling.

For nearly three hours law enforcement blocked off the area to protect the public, and the standoff for the wanted man, tentatively identified, as Troy Mackawayne, (spelling not immediately available) lasted for several hours.

Meanwhile dozens of people were gathering in the streets, waiting to hear what was happening. Police even evacuated nearby neighborhoods and pushed the perimeters back.  Shortly after, they drew their guns and he was caught.

"He tried to escape out a window, contact was made and he was taken into custody without further incident."

Police say the suspect will face additional charges after Monday's incident.
