It's HERE! Sunshine, warm temperatures, shorts and sunglasses, days at the beach and for kids, the best 2 months of the year! Summer is HERE!!!
Summer "officially" (or astronomically) began at 7:09pm EDT. Summer "officially" is the moment when the sun is at its most northern point in the sky. The sun is most directly "overhead" at this moment in time. The Earth points toward the sun at the solstice, and then continues its path around the sun, and it is from then on that the days begin to get shorter. Okay, that's a depressing thought... (unless you just LOVE Fall and Winter... if that's the case, then REJOICE!)
June 20th, 2012 featured the longest daylight hours of any day of the year, with over 15 hours and 33 minutes of sunshine. Sunrise time was at 5:08 am, and sunset was 8:41pm. While you won't notice much of a difference for the next few days, gradually the days will begin to get shorter. Sunrise and sunset time will slowly get closer and closer together. Check out the calendar here.
