MONTPELIER, Vt. -

The key to getting Vermont out of a $3 billion dollar pension problem, may rest on the same generation that put it there.

The problem is, unfunded pension and retiree benefits.

Every year that goes by, Vermont falls further and further behind. Tuesday night, a retired CPA outlined possible solutions.

Although David Coates has no official role in state government, he says, they should listen because right now, we're all a liability.

"We still need to structurally change it going forward for them because we don't want them paying for the rest of their lives and their children's lives, we made the problem our generation, we should solve it," David Coates, retired CPA said.

Among those in attendance, Vermont Senator Vince Illuzzi, who is running for state auditor, and Randy Brock who is running for governor.
