Vt. Guard Chief Says Some F-35 Opponents Wrong

COLCHESTER, Vt. -

(AP) - The head of the Vermont National Guard says the F-35 fighter jets the Air Force is considering basing at the Burlington International Airport are a "pathway to the future" for the Guard and if they are sent elsewhere hundreds of local jobs could be lost.

Adjutant Gen. Michael Dubie says the new planes are louder, but the guard would implement aggressive noise abatement policies. That's not enough to please opponents, many who feel the louder planes could reduce their property values.

A public comment period about a draft environmental impact statement ends Wednesday. The Air Force is expected to decide in November where to base the planes.
