Winooski River Bridge Construction

Posted: Updated:
MONTPELIER, Vt. -

Vermont is getting ready to implement an historic engineering project to bring a narrow, deteriorating bridge across the Winooski River in Richmond into the 21st century:

They're going to cut it in two lengthwise, winch the two sides apart and then rebuild it to meet modern standards.

After 15 months of preparation, state engineers are getting ready to separate the sides of the bridge and add steel, and eventually concrete, so motorists won't have to worry about meeting a truck coming the other way.

The project is going to cost an estimated $16 million. Replacing it with a new bridge would cost an estimated $7 million, but officials say the project is worth the cost.
