ESSEX, Vt. -
There are about a dozen homes that line Colbert Street in Essex, Vermont.
But for the last 12 months one has stood out.
A year ago Friday something happened at 8 Colbert Street that has left police and neighbors baffled.
"It could've been anybody, at any time," said Wendy James.
On June 8th, 2011, police say Bill and Lorraine Currier went missing from their ranch style home.
Fast forward to a year later and it's hard to tell something happened there.
But take a closer look and the flowers on the doorstep tell a different story.
"Still not knowing. That's what's most upsetting, not knowing what happened," said James.
James lives across the street from the Curriers.
She says it's hard to believe a year has passed since her neighbors went missing.
James says it's difficult to come home and pass the Currier's house.
"It's been very eerie to have it completely empty on what is mostly a very alive street," said James.
James says it's not just the empty house that reminds her of the Currier's but she says when you walk by it sometimes you'll look up at the trees out front and find messages or notes left in the branches.
As days turned into months and now months into a year James says it's hard to imagine seeing Bill and Lorraine waving to her as she drives by.
"Truthfully I'm not even entertaining that thought at this point," said James.
Although she says it's a sight she would welcome in an instant.
We reached out to Essex Police Chief Brad Larose for comment.
He says due to the ongoing investigation at the landfill in Coventry, Vermont, he can't talk about case.
Federal authorities say there's no end date when they plan to leave the dump.
