Vt Telecom Inks Deal to Expand Cell Phone Coverage

MONTPELIER, Vt. -

(AP) - Cellular telephone coverage should be getting better in 17 towns along 90 miles of rural Vermont roadways after a company installs specialized "small-cell" radio equipment on utility poles and other structures.

The Vermont Telecommunications Authority is planning to provide $500,000 to help wholesale cellular service provider CoverageCo, of Cambridge, Mass., extend service into underserved parts of the state as part of a demonstration project.

In addition to the 90 miles the state is helping to subsidize, CoverageCo is planning to install the equipment on another 125 miles of roadway across the state using private capital.

The equipment is expected to be installed this fall. The targeted areas include sections of Orange, Lamoille, Franklin and Caledonia counties.
