PERU, N.Y. -

Bryan J. Carte, of Peru, N.Y. was sentenced to five years for strangulation in the second degree.

A press release says, the conviction comes after he repeatedly assaulted and strangled his girlfriend.

"We are very pleased with the sentence handed down by Judge McGill," stated Assistant District Attorney Douglas Collyer, who prosecuted the case.  "It is difficult to prosecute these types of matters and I would like to recognize the responding troopers of the New York State Police for thoroughly investigating this case so that justice could be done."

A Clinton County jury deliberated for about five hours over two days when they found out on April 3, 2011, Carte smashed pizza in the victims face before choking and punching her multiple times. The victim received numerous abrasions, a concussion, facial contusions and a sprained knee from the incident. The press release also states that Carte was also convicted of breaking the victim's finger on March 5, 2011 and her arm on March 23, 2011.

Officials say the victim was not cooperative in the prosecution of the case.

Carte was sentenced to one year in jail on each charge, to be served concurrently. He was also ordered to pay $1,500 in fines and $375 in mandatory surcharges. The Judge also issued an order of protection for the victim that expires in 2025.
