Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Superintendent of the Burlington School District, Gene Collins, issued a diversity plan to help bridge the achievement gap in Burlington, Vt. schools.

Collins announced the plan at a press conference Friday.

Collins says she plans on eliminating race, ethnicity, class, gender and sexual orientation as predictors of academic performance, discipline and co-curricular participation in the upcoming years.

In addition to closing the achievement gap, the reports says, the school district is also looking to create a welcoming school climate without racism, discrimination, harassment and bullying to the best extent possible.

By October 2012, the Burlington School district will present a strategic plan to the community.
