TUPPER LAKE, N.Y. -

An "incredibly sweet" skunk rescued in New Hampshire and rehabilitated died just before a gala to introduce it at an upstate New York wildlife center.

Trillium had been in quarantine for several weeks at The Wild Center in Tupper Lake, in the Adirondack Mountains. The Wild Center got her from the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center in Holderness, N.H., where she was rehabilitated.

Trillium was to be the guest of honor this weekend at The Wild Center's Black and White Ball. But last week, Trillium started ailing. She was taken to a veterinarian last Thursday morning and died later that day.

Leah Valerio, assistant curator at The Wild Center, says Trillium was a great teaching tool and ambassador for a species that most people try to stay far away from.
