MARSHFIELD, Vt. -
Update: Vermont state police say Russell Douse, 54 of East Montpelier, tried to lure a 14-year-old Twinfield Union school student to have sex with him in March.
Washington Northeast Supervisory Superintendent Nancy Thomas says school leaders found out about the incident shortly after it happened.
"When we heard about the allegations Mark Mooney, who's our principal, immediately put Russell on leave," said Thomas.
While on leave, police investigated the incident.
On Wednesday, Douse was arrested and Superintendent Thomas and others started to learn more about what had happened.
"Oh it's devastating. We work really hard to make that not only are our students to learn but that they're safe," said Thomas.
Douse was fired from the district less than a month after being put on leave.
For nearly four years he worked as a bus driver and custodian.
Douse's address in the phone book brings you to route 14N.
We showed his photo to neighbors, who verified that he lives there.
But when we went to the door no one answered.
Douse will back in court next month.
In the mean time Superintendent Thomas says her staff prepared to support students in the days to come.
"We have no reason to think that there are any other students involved."
But Thomas says they'll continue to be vigilant.
