Newport Police Say 1 Dead, 1 Critical in Vt Crash

NEWPORT, Vt. -

Newport police say one person was killed and another critically injured when the truck they were riding in went off U.S. Route 5 and hit a tree in the Vermont city.

A third passenger in the late-Saturday-night crash is listed in stable condition.

Police say the crash was reported at about 10:45 p.m. Saturday on Route 5 before the intersection of Airport Road.

Rescue workers had to cut open the wreckage to remove the passengers.

Police say 29-year-old Andru Johnson, of Charleston, was pronounced dead at North Country Hospital in Newport.

The other two passengers were taken to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

Police say 29-year-old Coral Sargent of Westfield was listed in critical condition, while 29-year-old Andrea Royer of Newport was listed in stable condition.
