Plant Give Away for Flood Survivors

Posted: Updated:
WATERBURY, Vt. -

Some more help tonight for victims of Tropical Storm Irene.  Its been eight months, but many families are just now getting back into their homes, to help with the damaged landscaping, the FEMA funded organization "Starting Over Strong Vermont" organized a plant give away for flood survivors in one of the hardest hit areas today.

Hundreds of trees, shrubs and herbs were donated in an effort to help the people of Waterbury take that next step toward rebuilding and renewing their homes.

"Now that they're back in their house and the house has been rebuilt, the yard is gray and brown, people are just putting grass seed in, so now they're taking perennials home, they get to plant their perennials and get instant color, instant garden!" Christina Ducharne said, who is a Crisis Counselor for Starting Over Strong Vermont.

Ducharne says gardening is a stress reducer for many people, so getting their gardens back together is a symbol of hope.
