Feds Say Death Charges Possible in Vt. Drug Death

RUTLAND, Vt. -

(AP) - Federal prosecutors in Vermont say they are considering filing charges against a Massachusetts man suspected of killing a woman in Dummerston last summer that could carry a possible death sentence.

Twenty-eight-year-old Frank Caraballo, of Holyoke, Mass., pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Rutland to charges he distributed cocaine in the Brattleboro area in June and July of last year.

There was no plea agreement in place when Caraballo entered the plea. Federal prosecutors say they are considering filing a charge of murder with the use of a firearm during a drug-trafficking crime against Caraballo.

Caraballo was initially charged in state court with second-degree murder in the death of Barratt, but the state dismissed the murder charges after the federal government decided to prosecute the case.
