(AP) - The number of Lyme disease cases has been dropping in New Hampshire, and public health officials hope it stays that way.
With tick season under way, the state Division of Public Health is warning residents to take precautions to avoid being bitten. Lyme disease, which can lead to severe headaches, neck pain and other problems if untreated, is transmitted to people by infected deer tick. New Hampshire has one of the highest incidence rates in the country.
There were 1,300 cases last year, about 40 less than the previous year and significantly fewer than the high of almost 1,600 in 2008. Officials recommend that people avoid tick-infested areas, use appropriate insect repellent and check themselves and family members for ticks after being outdoors.
