Police Will Be Enforcing Trespassing Violations on Land Surrounding Berlin Pond

Posted: Updated:
BERLIN, Vt. -

The Montpelier and Berlin Police Departments say they will be enforcing trespassing violations on the property around Berlin Pond that is owned and posted by the City of Montpelier.

The land around the pond had been posted for years, prior to the Vermont Supreme Court ruling on May 11, that the city can't stop people from fishing, boating or swimming on it.

Police say as a result of this decision, there have been numerous reports of criminal trespass around the pond.

Trespassing on posted land is subject to a citation to appear in criminal court for violating Vermont state law. If convicted, a person could face no more than 3 months in prison or fined not more than $500, or both.
