Smart Meters in Burlington

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Out of the 20,000 smart meters that are to be installed in Burlington by the end of the year, 3,000 are in.

But because of the growing number of people who fear radio frequency health concerns and privacy associated with the new meters, about ten percent are saying they don't want them.
To show support of the new technology, businesses are stepping forward to talk about the benefits. Most recently, the Chamber of Commerce.

The President of the Burlington Chamber says advancements in meters that are attached to the side of each home will allow residents to see how energy is used. They can ultimately save money.

The Burlington Mayor also supports the project. "Keeping our energy costs low as we go into the future, efficiently managing our resources, addressing the challenges of climate change, all of those are in some sense at stake in this advanced meter effort," Miro Weinberger, the Burlington Mayor said.

Burlington electric says the smart meters will also save staff time. Meters will be read from a computer, rather than from each individual home.  They will also be able to immediately respond to outages.
