Two Hikers Lost on Hunger Mountain Led to Safety Early Wednesday Morning

Posted: Updated:
MIDDLESEX, Vt. -

Two hikers were rescued on Hunger Mountain early Wednesday morning after they became lost.

A press release says that 911 dispatchers received a phone call late in the evening from a 22-year-old male, of Essex Vt., and a 23-year-old female, of East Montpelier, Vt. who reported they were hiking on the mountain when it became dark and were not able to proceed. They told dispatchers they had no water, food, lights, or extra clothing and requested to be rescued.

Troopers tried to locate the hikers, but the hiker's cell phone battery died and contact was lost. Rescue crews were able to determine the hikers were up on the Middlesex side of the mountain.

As a team from the Waterbury Backcountry Rescue was ascending the mountain, they found the hikers being guided down by the father of the male. The press release states, he responded after being contacted by the male via cell phone.

The group was led off the mountain near North Bear Swamp Road at 2:50 a.m. No injuries were reported.

Officials are reminding hikers to always check the weather forecast and take adequate clothing, water, food, matches, maps, and lights on any hike.
