BURLINGTON, Vt. -
The Vermont Air National Guard is in the running to get upgraded fighter jets.
That means F-35's may soon fly over our area but many people are concerned about the noise they produce.
So we wanted to know just how much noisier they are than what the Air Guard currently flies.
The Air Force released maps to show the potential impact of the new and louder jet. They show that for about 3,000 people who live around the airport life would get noisier.
The Air Force breaks the sound increase into five categories.
The lowest is 65 decibels and that's about the sound of a normal conversation. The Air Force says that would affect up to 1,500 new people.
The sound of a hairdryer, is the next level, 70 decibels. The Air Force says about 1,100 new people would be affected.
75 decibels would sound like you were standing right next to an interstate. That would affect a new group of 230 people.
Last would be the 80 decibel level or that of a garbage disposal. About seventy new people would hear that.
The Air Force admits the F-35 would affect more than people just in the Burlington area.
Maps show the guard's training areas in the Adirondacks and the White Mountains where the Air Force says the jet sound would increase and people might be "annoyed."
Now all these sounds levels are just averages for the entire day and at some times the noise from the F-35 could be much louder.
