Green Groups Hail Vt. Hydraulic Fracturing Ban

MONTPELIER, Vt. -

(AP) - Vermont environmental groups are applauding the Legislature and Gov. Peter Shumlin for making the state the first to ban a controversial natural gas drilling technique called hydraulic fracturing.

The Vermont Natural Resources Council issued a statement saying it was "extremely pleased" with Shumlin's signing of the bill. VNRC's Jake Brown says the ban came four years after lawmakers deemed groundwater in Vermont to be a public trust - a resource owned by all of the state's residents.

Environmentalists say hydraulic fracturing, in which water and chemicals are injected into the ground at high pressure to extract gas and oil, has damaged water supplies in parts of the country where it has occurred. The natural gas industry disputes this.
