Vermont State Police Warning of Another Phone Scam

Posted: Updated:
PAWLET, Vt. -

The Vermont State Police are warning of a phone scam that took place in Rutland County. This comes after law enforcement held a press conference Thursday about a new phone scam from Jamaica affecting millions of Americans.

Police say, a male subject pretending to be an attorney called a residence in Pawlet, Vt. advising that their grandson was in an accident. The caller stated that their grandson was at fault for the accident and was in jail and money was needed to pay for his medical and legal expenses.

The caller put another person on the phone pretending and sounding like their grandson. A short while later, police say, the attorney returned to the phone and instructed money to be wired to Manuela Matos in Pena, Peru.

The grandparents were able to make contact with their grandson and verified he was not the person on the phone and involved in an accident.

The Vermont State Police advise to use caution when receiving requests for money from unverified sources.  To learn more about common telemarketing scams and how to avoid them, visit the Federal Trade Commission's website at www.ftc.gov.
