BURLINGTON, Vt. -
Court officials say confusion over a 1995 judge's order nearly led to the release of a man who completed 20 years in prison on a murder conviction.
Douglas Mason served the time for a 1992 murder in Barre. In 1995, he was charged with making threats against the judge who imposed the sentence. At that time, he received a three-year sentence for sending Judge Linda Levitt a threatening letter.
The Burlington Free Press reports the second sentence wasn't supposed to start until Mason finished the first one, but uncertainty over that nearly allowed him to be freed.
Assistant U.S. Attorney William Darrow said the government requested a federal arrest warrant so Mason could be detained until a hearing. One is scheduled for Friday.
