BRETTON WOODS, NH -
He might have lost his mom but the son of Melissa Jenkins has gained the support of an entire community.
Jenkins was the St. Johnsbury mom and teacher who police say was brutally killed in front of her young son in March.
On Saturday, a major fundraiser took place for Ty and it happened at the Omni Mount Washington Resort in New Hampshire.
About two-hundred people golfed in the charity tournament "Tee It Up For Ty."
Many of these golfers had only heard about Jenkins from news stories.
"It's just one of those tragic things that any way you can help," says golfer John Marshall.
But for team 17A, they knew Jenkins well. They are long time customers at the Creamery Restaurant in Danville, Vermont where Jenkins had worked.
"You think about it all the time. But it's a lot of good memories though," says Steve Larrabee.
The day also included a BBQ fundraiser and the MC was actor Luis Guzman.
Guzman is from the Northeast Kingdom and his kids go to school at the St. Johnsbury Academy where Jenkins had been a teacher.
"Makes me really proud to be from a place like this and how everyone just came together," says Guzman.
There was also a silent auction which included donations from celebrities. All together, the event is expected to raise thousands of dollars to help Ty eventually pay for school.
"It's been really amazing, the overflow of love, the family has gotten, especially this little boy," says Guzman.
There was a special guest at this fundraiser who we haven't seen until now: Ty.
The now 2 1/2 year-old was a little tired from a nap but the family says, considering everything, he has been doing well and is living with a guardian.
Family members say they want to send thanks to the community for putting on this event and donating money for Ty.
"It's pretty amazing that everyone has come to support this little boy. We appreciate it all," says John Jenkins, Melissa's brother.
The family says Ty is almost like any other two-year-old and was even given some kid golf clubs and played a little.
